This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
